What is an Externship?
An Externship is a career shadowing experience that typically lasts from a few hours to one week. Externships provide students with the opportunity to observe professionals and learn about possible careers in that field. Externships can be done by any student during any time of the year. For example, an externship could be done in Gainesville on an afternoon when you don't have class or during a spring, summer, or winter break in your hometown or other break destination.

Key Features:
Externships are great options for students of any academic year who are unsure of their major or career goals, who want to "test" a career without a semester-long (or longer) commitment to a company. You choose the city in which to Extern. You are responsible for housing, transportation, and all expenses during your externships; therefore, you must choose a city in which you can make these arrangements.

Why Extern?

  • Can help you clarify your educational and career goals
  • Opportunity to observe professionals in your field of interest
  • Explore opportunities in your major
  • Develop a professional network
Here is some helpful step-by-step information to assist you with setting up your externship:
STEP 1 - Explore: Identify Occupations, Job Titles, or Potential Companies/Organizations
STEP 2 - Identify: Identify Potential Contacts
STEP 3 - Contact:Make Contact with Potential Hosts
STEP 4 - Prepare: Prepare Questions to Ask Your Host
STEP 5 - On-Site: Things to Do While on Your Externship
STEP 6 - Follow-Up: Upon Your Return From Your Externship

Important Note!
Externships are a purely optional activity in which students freely and voluntarily participate. They will receive no academic or other credit for such participation, and they are in no way required to participate in an externship.
