STEP 5: On-Site - Things to Do While on Your Externships

While at your externship, remember that you are representing UF - be professional. Make sure to allow ample time for travel to your externship site and arrive on time.

First impressions are always important; therefore, when meeting your Extern Host for the first time, politely introduce yourself and shake your host's hand. Let them know that you appreciate the time that they are devoting to you. Be sure that you are dressed appropriately (CRC Workshop: "Dress for Success" Streaming Video) for your externship environment and pay special attention to your body language. A cheerful and enthusiastic attitude will be both welcomed and appreciated by your host.

Some possible activities for you to complete during your externship might include:

Informational interview using your prepared questions
Attend office/departmental meetings
Talk to or interview company administration or other colleagues of your host
Tour other departments within the organization

Of course, these will vary depending on the location/focus of your externship.

Ask for business cards from your host and any professionals you meet while you are on-site so that you can keep them as a contact for additional information in the future.

At the end of your externship experience, be sure to thank your host(s) before you leave. Let them know how much you valued your experience and the time they volunteered to spend with you. Also, send a follow-up thank you note to your host (and any other professionals whom you may have met) when you return home. The Externship "Print & Go" Packet in Step 4 will help you with organizing and following-up with your host.

NOTE: We know what a wonderful learning experience externships can be. However, your participation in an externship is completely voluntary, and your safety is our biggest concern. If you have any concerns about safety at any time before or during your externship, please do not feel obligated to complete the externship. Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Experiential Education Team at the CRC for assistance.
