STEP 2: Identify Potential Contacts
Once you have researched your career area thoroughly,
it's time to determine who to contact to secure an externship
host/site.
A great place to begin to identify potential contacts
is through family, friends, and/or instructors. You
can also identify contacts through the Career Resource
Center employer listings, which include Gator
CareerLink and the Internship
Database as well as through a collection of
business cards available at the CRC's information desk
compiled from many of the companies and organizations
that correspond with and/or have visited the CRC. Telephone
directories, networking contacts within the community,
and the Internet are other viable resources.
You may have to contact the company/organization to
identify someone you can contact directly. Through your
earlier research, you should have become familiar with
professional titles for the types of employers you are
trying to contact. As an example, if you are interested
in a marketing position, you might contact a particular
company and ask for the name of the director of the
marketing department. Usually you don't have to identify
yourself to elicit the name, title, and email or business
mailing address of the individual.
Coming Soon! The
CRC is currently recruiting employers and UF alumni
to volunteer as Extern Hosts. Students will soon be
able to access an Externship Database
in which professionals in various careers and industries
may be identified through a simple search.
Once you've developed a list of contacts, it's time
to make contact with your potential host!
