International Internships
Finding International Employment
- Overseas internships can make the professional job search less troublesome. By establishing yourself professionally in a county, you familiarize yourself with the country’s immigration laws and business practices and you establishes your credibility with employers, who will be more likely to take a chance on going through the legal paperwork for a foreigner who already is an employee.
- Programs like the UN Headquarters Internship Program in New York, interning for the US State Department or interning at a multinational corporation at home can help you find government work abroad after graduation.
You may have to volunteer or take a less glamorous internship position, but the experience will get you abroad and open up different avenues for your career.
Finding an Internship
- Secure an international internship through an international internship program. Undergraduates should use an internship placement program, as they set up the experience and necessary legal paperwork for you.
- Many international internships will be unpaid but may include financial assistance.
- Independently secure an internship by directly applying or contacting organizations/corporations. Know why you are interested and what makes you stand out from the other candidates they have in their country when making your case.
- NETWORK. As with finding an internship at home, do not be afraid to build and use your network of contacts, including your professors. Talk to employers at Showcase, family friends and professors to find out about potential opportunities.
