Choosing or Changing Your Major – No Big Deal!

We are here to help you figure out what you want out of your career. A big part of exploring career paths is exploring who you are. This can include your personality, strengths, values, interests, and skills. The Career Resource Center is a place to help you understand these factors now.

Find Your Major or Career

Students (and families) usually think that the major students choose will determine their career. This is actually a myth! Majors teach transferable skills that can be used in multiple different career paths. Your education and experiences outside of the classroom will help you prepare for your future work.

Many factors affect the major and career you choose. These factors include: the economy, chance, personality, skills, major, culture, location, values, family, interests and thousands of others. The factors that go into your career choice are unique to you.

These are questions our career planners are frequently asked:

What happens if I want to change my major or career path?

You are not alone! On average, people have about 11 jobs in their lifetime and often 2 or more different careers. We change as people, so our careers can change too.

Your path can have unexpected twists and turns, but each new experience teaches you more about yourself and what you are looking for in your career.

What do I need to consider when making this decision?

The most important thing you need to know about when exploring career paths is you. You may have a good idea of your strengths and weaknesses. You may know what you like and do not like. Sometimes it is hard to describe these things to others. Use CHOMP or attend an Explore Lab Workshop to find the words to articulate what you are looking for.

How can I learn more?

You can learn more about yourself and the world of work by trying new things. Experiences that can supplement your classes are important. These opportunities can include:

  • Student Organizations
  • Academic Research
  • Study/Work Abroad
  • Co Ops
  • Volunteering
  • Part-Time Work
  • On-Campus Employment
  • Class Projects
  • Job Shadowing
  • Federal Work Study
  • Interviewing
